The City of Ulsan announced on October 31 that Ulsan Urban Railway Line 2 has been officially selected as a candidate project for the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s 10th Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee.

The project will invest a total of 440 billion KRW, with the goal of opening in 2032, marking a major step forward in Ulsan’s public transportation infrastructure. The planned route begins at Bukulsan Station, passes through the Jinjang Distribution Complex in Buk-gu, continues along Beonyeong-ro in Jung and Nam-gu, and terminates at Yaum Intersection in Nam-gu. The total length is 13.55 km and includes 14 stations.

This selection marks the second major milestone following the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport’s investment review approval in August, signaling the realization of one of Ulsan’s long-held aspirations. Although the city’s initial application in August last year was rejected due to a perceived lack of urgency, Ulsan successfully persuaded the evaluation committee this year by emphasizing the linkage between Line 1 and the newly approved “Ulsan–Yangsan–Busan Metropolitan Railway.”

Once the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s preliminary feasibility study is passed, the project will proceed with the establishment of a basic plan, detailed design, and construction phase, aiming to break ground in 2029. Upon completion, the combined operation of Lines 1 and 2 will form a cross-shaped rail network covering the entire city, significantly enhancing transportation convenience for citizens.

Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom stated, “The opening of Urban Railway Line 2 will be a turning point that transforms Ulsan’s public transportation paradigm. The railway will serve as the main artery while buses will complement as feeder lines, maximizing efficiency,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure the project proceeds smoothly according to the original plan.”
